Scientology stands a chance

Jean E. Rosenfeld writes: "Scientology is a new religion, and unlike most, it may become an established religion whether the rest of us like it or not. All religions have origin myths, and all religions keep secrets from the uninitiated. If a nonbeliever were to tell the origin myth of Christianity, it would sound no less fantastic than the Thetan myth of L. Ron Hubbard." More information here.

Comments:
All religions do not have creation myths. If God exists, true religion exists. The fact that there are so many religions that imitate Christianity is strong evidence in its favor; one does not attempt to counterfeit something worthless. Rosenfeld paints a caricature of Christianity. For the record, Christianity has no "secrets," does not posit a "split" in the Godhead, says nothing about "billions of years" nor is it unequivocal about "seven years of heaven sent catastrophes." Finally, deconstructing Christianity in some misguided tu quoque argument isn't much of a proof for Scientology though it apparently is the best one can do; false religions are ultimately incoherent.

The future is unwritten. Sure, Scientology looks ridiculous to most folks (myself included), but so does Mormonism (really? American Indians are the lost tribe of Israel?) and yet it managed to flourish. Whether a religion has any "truth" to it or not doesn't matter; all that matters is the way in which that religion satisfies some aspect of the human psyche.

For the record, christianity is based on older religions. Besides, it's well tested and works. If I were to create a new religion (whatever my motivation was), I would of course base it on something that has proven to gain blind following. Christianity is a good choice.
